Youth Program
Today’s youth, the leaders of tomorrow, are looking for a challenge for responsibility, for faith and for trust. As Knights, it is our responsibility to provide youth with the means and the opportunities to become personally committed and involved in meeting the challenges of our times. There is a great deal more all of us can do to improve our youth programs.

Columbian Squires
The official youth organization of the Knights of Columbus, with the main objective of developing leadership skills in Catholic young men. Membership is open to young Catholic men ages 10-18 years old. The Squires is deserving of primary consideration for any council’s youth program.

Soccer Challenge Contest
A program for boys and girls between the ages or 9 and 14, that tests various kicking and shooting skills. This competition is conducted at the council, district, regional and state levels to determine the winners. The results from the State Council competition are forwarded to the Supreme Council office to determine international winners. Council competitions are held in September. Free-Throw Competition
A program for boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 14. Shoot-offs are conducted at the council, district, regional and state levels to determine the winners. The results from the State Council competition are forwarded to the Supreme Council office to determine international winners. Council competitions are held in January. To organize your council’s competition, order the Free Throw Kit (#FT-Kit) from the Supreme Council office.

State Spelling Bee Competition
An annual event conducted in conjunction with the respective Office of Catholic Schools, and Catholic primary schools in Connecticut. Councils are encouraged to work with Catholic schools in their community to assist in conducting this program at the initial and regional levels.

Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest
This contest’s goal is to encourage the creation of thought-provoking slogans and visuals by young people for their peers that promote awareness of the dangers of substance abuse. Entries fall under the categories of Alcohol Awareness and Abuse, or Drug Awareness and Abuse. Competition levels are broken down by age: ages 8 to 11, and ages 12 to 14. Catholic Citizen Essay Contest
The essay contest is open to all Catholic students graduating from elementary (8th graders) and high schools (12th graders). Participants prepare compositions on a theme taken from Church writings, and range between 500 – 750 words in length. Councils are encouraged to conduct this program in a timeframe that would allow winners to be announced at graduations or other year end programs. Rev. Donald Barry, SJ State Scholarship Program
Annually the State Council awards five $750.00 scholarships to High school seniors entering a four-year college or university. Application deadline is March 1, and recipients are announced at the Annual State Convention held in early May. [Rules and Application]
